Pensions, Stocks & Shares

Stocks and Shares

Whilst some people regard investment in stocks and shares as a sophisticated form of gambling, others study and play markets with keen observation and consummate skill, building up their funds and accumulating wealth. Returns on Stocks & Shares are paid by way of dividends. The value of stocks & shares will fluctuate over time and some shares are more valuable than others. Many external factors such as sectors, economic or political issues will affect the value of stocks & shares.

If you invest over a long term, any fall in the Stock Market will only be an 'on paper' loss until you decide to cash in your stocks and shares, so it's always worth waiting until the market improves. Then the question is: do you hang on a little longer and take advantage of a possible continued rise, whilst also risking a sudden fall? Alternatively, do you play safe and sell whilst you know you'll be in pocket? Such is the continued allure of the Stock Market!

Pensions

Pensions have always been regarded as the most obvious route to saving for retirement, especially with the benefits of tax relief on sums contributed. In addition, company pension schemes often include a contribution by the employer.

Where do you go for advice?

The best place to start is by seeking the advice of an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). As the name suggests, IFAs supply truly independent and unbiased advice, and will have a comprehensive knowledge of the many saving and investment schemes on offer. They'll assess your current financial circumstances, establish your fiscal goals - and propose a plan which should achieve your aims whilst remaining within your budgetary parameters.
