Paying for the cost of education - a challenge for every parent

Time was when paying for a child's education was only the concern of those who made the decision to send their children to private school - but now it's a matter of concern for every parent who wants to give their children the best educational start in life at school and college.

This is all the more crucial when you consider that college and university fees are rising, whilst local authority grants are falling - in fact one day in the not too distant future, they'll be done away with altogether. Currently, university grants are very limited, so the only choice for students is private support, bursaries - or student loans, with which students can pay for their expenses. The maximum loan amount is dictated by the student's choice of university, whether or not they still live at home, and parents' income.

Consider also the cost of private education - now estimated at over £100,000 per child - and it's clear that saving for the cost of education is a serious consideration for all conscientious parents.

However, with sensible forward planning and sound advice, it is possible to plan for the cost of private education without putting an impossible strain on existing resources. But where do you start?
